VIDEO: Avoiding germs at the movies
Like sporting events, concerts and shopping malls, theaters are public venues and can be breeding grounds for germs.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Coast to coast, movie theaters are already packed for the first showings of the newest "Star Wars" installment, "The Force Awakens."

Thousands of others will be going during the weekend and in the coming weeks.

And some people, believe it or not, may even be seeing other new releases.

Like sporting events, concerts and shopping malls, theaters are public venues and can be breeding grounds for germs.

So we have some tips to help you avoid them.

Hand rails, elevator buttons and video games can be covered with germs that could make you sick so keep in mind one of the best ways to stay healthy is pretty simple.

"Wash your hands before you eat," says Dr. Neha Vyas of the Cleveland Clinic.

"That's one of the biggest things - it's simple you know. Go wash your hands, make sure they're clean before you put any food in your mouth," Dr. Vyas adds.

Soap and water is best, but if you don't have access to a sink, you can use hand sanitizer or wipes.

And with this, there's no need to be a germ-a-phobe.

Germs are everywhere, but they shouldn't stop you from having fun.

However, if you get to the movie and realize someone near you is coughing a lot, better to find a different seat.

On the other hand, if you're the one doing the coughing, it's better to stay home until you're feeling better.

Don't let sickness be your sequel to the movie.
