NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- Delaware State Police say two men were charged Friday in connection with a trooper-involved shooting of a man police say was armed while investigating a home invasion robbery.

James McCardell, 39, of Colora, Maryland, and Brian Richardson of Philadelphia are facing multiple charges including two counts of first-degree attempted robbery and seven counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Troopers were called around 10:29 p.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Salem Church Road in Newark.

When they arrived, police say McCardell confronted them with a gun.

The trooper then fired a shot hitting him in the lower torso, police say.

McCardell underwent surgery and is listed in stable, but serious condition at Christiana Hospital Trauma Center in police custody in lieu of $219,000.00 secured bond.

Richardson is being held at the Department of Corrections in default of $518,000.00 secured bond.

Police are searching for a third person who fled the scene.

The trooper and five other people who were inside the home were not injured.

Police say the trooper involved in the incident is a three-and-a-half year veteran of the Delaware State Police assigned to Troop 2 in Glasgow. He has been placed on administrative leave as per Divisional Policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.
