Katie Ledecky adds third gold as U.S. wins 4x200 freestyle relay

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Katie Ledecky anchored the United States women to gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay Wednesday night, giving the American her third Olympic gold medal of these Games.

The U.S. team trailed the entire race until Ledecky caught the Australian team in the second lap of her leg to lead the Americans to a finishing time of 7:43.03.

Australia finished second (7:44.87) and Canada took the bronze (7:45.39).

Allison Schmitt, Maya DiRado and Leah Smith will join Ledecky on the podium.

The U.S. has won five of six gold medals in the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the Olympics since the event was introduced in 1996.
