UPPER MERION TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A man has died after he was shot by police during a confrontation at a home in Upper Merion Twp., Montgomery County early Thursday morning.
Officials say the Montgomery County Mobile Crisis Unit was working with the family in the home around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday trying to help a man who was suicidal.
But, things took a turn around 1 a.m. when police received a call that the man was armed with a knife.
Police say they tried to de-escalate the situation and gain rapport with the man, but he refused to comply with demands and came towards them with a knife.
Officers used a taser, but say it had no effect.
According to police, the man continued coming towards them with the knife, and two officers fired their weapons.
They took life-saving measures, but he died at the scene.
His name has not been released.
The family did not want to talk on Thursday, only saying the man was a veteran in crisis.
The investigation into the shooting was turned over to the district attorney's office in Bucks County because of a conflict of interest. However, authorities would not elaborate Thursday on what the conflict of interest is.
The officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
