Person killed ID'd after SUV crashes, catches fire in Del.

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a burning vehicle in Woodcrest.

WOODCREST, Del. (WPVI) -- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a burning vehicle in Woodcrest.

It happened around 2:56 p.m. Thursday on the 1000 block of East Newport Pike in the area of Fallon Road.

The driver, 80-year-old Edward Kowalski apparently lost control of his Ford Escape, left the roadway and hit a tree.

Firefighters rescued Kowalski from the vehicle.

He was rushed to Christiana Hospital where he died from his injuries.

It is unclear if the collision occurred because of a medical event.

East Newport Road in the area of the crash was closed in both directions for approximately 45 minutes for emergency vehicles.
