CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- A portion of the Barnes Foundation in Center City is now being used for a new public art and history project.

The Monument Lab opened for ideas on Sunday.

It's a joint effort between the Barnes and the Mural Arts program, aimed at finding out what ordinary citizens think should be honored or memorialized around Philadelphia.

"We invite people to come in and learn about the project, and propose their own monuments. These are monuments that can be creative, they can be urgent, they can speak to living histories in the city," artistic director Paul Farber said.

The monuments can be solid, bronze or steel, or they can use technology, employing light or sound.

Ten artists are already at work creating temporary monuments to go up in ten public parks this fall.
