New Jersey sailor to be laid to rest

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- Friends and family will say a final goodbye to American hero, Petty Officer Kenneth Smith.

The Cherry Hill native was killed when the USS John McCain collided with a merchant ship on August 21st near Singapore.

The 22-year-old electronics technician attended Cherry Hill East High School prior to joining the Navy.

Smith was recently promoted posthumously to rank 2nd class.

Nine other sailors also died in the accident.
