Study shows diabetes can be reversed without medication
Study shows diabetes can be reversed without medication - Ali Gorman reports during Action News at 5pm on December 5, 2017.

More than 30 million Americans have Type Two Diabetes. A new study shows a way to reverse the condition without medication.

It's definitely not an easy fix, but a study out of Scotland shows a strict weight loss program can reverse diabetes in less than a year without any drugs.

Researchers recruited more than 300 adults with type two diabetes who were not on insulin.

Half were put on a very low-calorie liquid diet for three to five months. After that, phase two was a re-introduction to healthy eating.

The average weight loss for the group was about 20 pounds and nearly half saw their diabetes go into remission.

It was a difficult program and a small number of people dropped out, but the majority say it improved the quality of their life.
