Device prepares brain for stroke rehab

A treatment for migraine and major depression may help stroke patients recover their movement.

Doctors at nearly a dozen centers nationwide are testing out Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

After a stroke, the healthy side of the brain can become too active, drowning out messages from the injured side.

But 20 minutes of TMS calms the overactive side, giving the injured side a better chance of recovering with rehab.

Dr. Marcie Bockbrader explains, "That magnetic field penetrates painlessly down through your scalp into your brain, and that induces an electric current that then interacts with the circuits in your brain."

Doctors pinpoint the treatment areas using an MRI.

The testing is in its final phase and it could be approved by 2017.
