PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A fire took the life of a 58-year-old Philadelphia man and seriously injured his 79-year-old father.

Firefighters were called to the 900 block of Foulkrod Street in Crescentville around 2:15 a.m. Monday.

The fire broke out in a two-story twin home. Arriving crews were met with flames shooting from the second story.

"I saw flames shooting out the side of the building," said neighbor Alex Rivera.

"The flames were billowing out of the side of the house. Quite a lot of flames," said neighbor John Gibson.

Firefighters reached the 79-year-old man on the second floor. He was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. He has since been stabilized.

The man's son was found in the rear of the home; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chuyin Robson was in her living room when firefighters arrived, telling her to evacuate. The fire had reached her home from right next door

"I heard people bang the door outside like crazy, like they were going to break the door," she said.

Neighbors say the family has lived on the street for many years and is well-known to the community.

The fire was placed under control around 2:50 a.m. One firefighter suffers a minor injury.

Red Paw Relief was on scene to help reunite pets with their owners.

Investigators say there were working smoke detectors inside the home. The cause remains under investigation.
