Police say the call came in around 4:14 p.m. for an "erratic driver" traveling over the Route 109 Bridge heading toward Cape May.
According to investigators, the 51-year-old driver from Lafayette Hill, Pa. struck a 63-year-old woman who was walking on the sidewalk along Lafayette Street.
"I heard the SUV rev its engine, sort of going really fast. It went through the intersection at a red light," recalled witness Nathan Laubham, who works nearby.
Laubham said the SUV was about to hit a van when the driver swerved back onto the road and struck the woman.
Police have not determined yet how fast the SUV was going at the time.

The driver then traveled up the road hitting two vehicles and a telephone pole, officials said.
The 63-year-old victim, identified as Eva Wolfe, of Marlton, NJ, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, the driver and his juvenile passenger were transported to the Cape Regional Medical Center and treated for their injuries.
It's still unclear what caused the driver to lose control.
