Police say the driver lost control and slammed into a mailbox and utility pole, trapping some of the victims in the vehicle.

According to investigators, a 17-year-old female and four others believed to be in their teens to early 20s were injured in the wreck.

At least one of the victims has died, police said.

There was no immediate word on the conditions of the remaining injured occupants.

"When I came out, I heard a little girl in a car screaming, 'help me, help me,'" recalled Tanya Green, a neighbor who says she called 911 and spoke to a victim.

"My children are that age and I just expressed to them how, you know, fragile life is and how you never know what's going to happen," said Joe Augustine, a neighbor who has lived along Greenwood Avenue for 22 years. He says this is not the first serious accident in front of his home.

As utility workers repair the poles and police begin to investigate how the driver lost control, neighbors hope other drivers will change their habits on this road.

"Every day those cars are flying by here. They really need to put a stop sign on this corner or something. Every day I worry someone is going to come flying through my window," said Green.

Investigators are looking into several angles including whether speed, the road, or the car's condition were a factor.

Police are also investigating if alcohol or other intoxicants were involved.
