HARTLY, Del. -- Delaware State Police have charged a man in a fatal hit-and-run crash last week involving an Amish buggy.

Authorities say 29-year-old Robert Eckeard of Hartly was taken into custody Wednesday.

Eckeard is charged with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, failure to report a collision resulting in death, and two traffic violations.

He was being held in lieu of $7,002 cash bond.

Investigators say 55-year-old Ervin D. Miller of Hartly was operating a horse-drawn carriage on State Route 8, attempting to make a left turn at the intersection with Hartly Road, when his buggy was hit by vehicle traveling eastbound on Route 8, ejecting both Miller and his 55-year-old wife.

Miller was pronounced dead at Kent General Hospital. His wife was recently released from the hospital.
