KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. (WPVI) -- Community gardens have been springing up around the area in recent years. City dwellers can grow their own healthy food, get fresh air and exercise.

And now, a Montgomery County apartment complex is tapping into the idea.

When the owners of 251 DeKalb in King of Prussia renovated the complex, wellness was a top priority.

There's a state-of-the-art fitness center, Kidville - which is a huge year-round play space for kids, and a community garden.

One of the developers got the idea when he became a first-time gardener.

"He enjoyed it so much, he started thinking, would tenants enjoy this as much?" Josh Levy

James and Catherine Schoolcroft always had gardens at their houses, but didn't expect to have one in an apartment.

Now they're preparing for a big harvest.

"We just get to come out every day to see things grow, and just see everybody's beautiful beds," Catherine Schoolcroft said.

The developers say along with fresh air, the garden also creates new bonds between residents.

"To make people feel more connected to their community, more connected to the building, and more connected to their neighbors," Levy said.

The owners of 251 DeKalb plan to create gardens at some of their other complexes.

And they wouldn't be surprised if it plants an idea in the minds of other building owners.
