Young diabetics need eye checks

Thursday, March 23, 2017
The growing number of children and teenagers who have diabetes may not be getting something crucial in their health care - regular eye examinations.

A University of Michigan team looked at young patients, and found that only two-thirds with type 1 diabetes were screened, and less than half with type 2 saw an eye specialist.

Rates were lower in minority communities.

Diabetes slowly damages blood vessels. The ones in the eyes are especially vulnerable.
