Ear infections in children common this time of year

Monday, November 13, 2017
Ear infections are common especially this time of year in children six months old and up to school-age.

Typically a middle ear infection starts with a cold or a cough for three or four days which then gets worse. Most kids will have a fever, be fussy and have trouble sleeping.

If they are tugging on their ear, it's not always a clear sign of infection.

"Kids will pull at their ears for a lot of different reasons and many times it's not actually a bacterial ear infection. It may be that they're teething and they're feeling the pain referred to their ears, it may be a behavioral thing and sometimes it certainly is an ear infection," said Dr. Skyler Kalady from the Cleveland Clinic.

For kids with persistent ear infections, ear tube surgery could be an option.
