Runners brave the heat for Bassett's Eat and Run 5K World Championship race at Citizens Bank Park

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Dozens took to the pavement at Citizens Bank Park Sunday morning for the Bassett's Eat and Run 5K World Championship race.

Participants were tasked with running 1.55 miles and then eating a pint of ice cream before completing the second half of the race.

So runners ran, but also ate some ice cream.

You might ask why on earth during arguable the hottest days of the summer season would someone subject themselves to running on pavement.

One runner said, "It was my stupid friend of mine that I run with. Lucky me."

Trasa Barreto of Ivyland said, "I wanted to support my friends. I didn't want to let them down. So I'm out here to die with them."

If you were wondering how it felt to go back out in that heat with a belly full of ice cream Suzanne Vrana said, "It's not pretty. You just gotta keep going keep going."

Marva Scarbo said, "I'm crazy. It's good though. I thought they were going to cancel it but they didn't and so I said I gotta do it."

As a precaution there were squirt zones set up across the parking lots to keep runners cool.

This certainly wasn't your typical way to beat the heat.
