VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Villanova Wildcats women's basketball advanced in the first round of the NCAA tournament behind a record-breaking performance from senior forward Maddy Siegrist.

The superstar became the first Villanova women's player ever to score 1,000 points in a single season when she scored 35 points Saturday night. It was a milestone that led to loud cheers from the fans who packed the Pavillion.

"When Maddy Siegrist made a shot, they said Maddy Seeee-grist," said Caroline Wirt from Malvern.

"I come to every game, and she's just wonderful. She has it down. It seems like every ball goes in, and she's a very humble young lady," said John Tartland, who graduated from Villanova in 1963.

Tartland was sporting a shirt with Siegrist's autograph to Saturday's game.

One former player marveled not only at her skill, but also at how many fans showed up to support the Wildcats.

"Back when we played, it was a concession stand with some soft pretzels and maybe 100 fans," said Jennifer Felten, who played for Villanova in the 90s. "The tide has turned."

"It's special to see the women succeeding like this during Women's History Month! Go Cats! Go Cats!" Kelechi Onuigbo cheered.

Perhaps no one is prouder of the accomplishment than Siegrist's dad.

"She's a hard worker. You know, she loves the game, and she's a student of the game, and she works hard to improve her game as much as she can," said George Siegrist.

But if you ask Siegrist, however, the 1,000 points aside, it's all about the team and the fan base.

"To play at home is just something I'll always cherish. And now to have another game at home - it's huge," said Siegrist.

Villanova will get another home game Monday night. They'll play Florida Gulf Coast University back at The Pavillion.
