BURLINGTON CITY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Torrential rains flooded streets and damaged homes in several South Jersey communities Thursday night.

A used car lot along Route 130 in Burlington City was swamped.

Police were blocking traffic in certain places, and near High Street water topped tires, and drivers needed emergency help.

"It's just a mess, High Street is flooded. They had to get the rescue boats out there to save four cars that were underwater. It's like the beach just eroded and came to High Street," said Amber Clark.

"I was driving and I know they usually tell you 'don't hit high water,' but when I was trying to slow down to reverse myself out of there that's when my car decided it wanted to conk out, and that was it," said Kendall Miller.

The problems weren't limited to the roads. Some homes were damaged as well.

"I have leaks in five different places, and I've never had leaks in my roof before," said Beverly Schaegelsberger.

Just across the street, plumber Moises Echevarria was assessing the extensive water damage in a residential basement.

In his 20 plus years doing this job, he says it's not often he's seen water damage like this in this area.

"I can tell the magnitude of the water was never like this in this area for a while," Echevarria said.

Burlington City activated its emergency operations center and was closely monitoring the Delaware River.
