Guns seized in Upper Darby to be melted down

Wednesday, November 1, 2017
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- About 125 guns rounded up in Upper Darby are being shipped off to be melted down.

The weapons are headed to a trash to steam plant in Chester, where they will be turned into electricity.

Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says over the past five years, his department has burned between 400 and 500 guns.

This collection will be the latest to become steam.

"Our goal is to make sure these guns never hit the streets again. They will be destroyed. We will not auction them off to supplement our budget, they won't get to gun dealers. They are going to be destroyed and that's the end of it," Chitwood said.

The weapons were either confiscated or collected during guilty pleas.
