Boy Scouts pack bags for Thanksgiving in Somerton

SOMERTON (WPVI) -- Local Boy Scouts volunteered their Saturday to lend a hand to help neighbors and friends during the holiday season.

Ten-year-old Colin Tees walks around his Somerton neighborhood in Philadelphia collecting bags for the 6abc/Dunkin Donuts Holiday Food Drive.

"We're going to feed the poor so they can have a feast, so they can have food for Thanksgiving," Colin said.

The proceeds will go to Philabundance and other local food charities to help families in need this holiday season.

Colin's dad, Nicholas Tees said, "We try to teach him the importance of giving back and this is a great way to do that."

Tees says his son and other members of Pack 367 learn a valuable lesson by going door to door collecting donations.

"Last week we gave out the bags in the cold and he understood what it was to give up that time of his own to do that," Tees said.

But for the boys, it's not all work.

"Yeah it's pretty fun," said Colin.

At Saint Christopher's Church in Somerton, dozens of bags filled with food are ready to be picked up by Philabundance volunteers. It's a holiday tradition they say makes their Thanksgiving complete.

Matthew Cronin of Troop Pack 367 said, "Scouting is about giving service to other people, so we participate in scouting for food every year as a community service project to help people in need."

You can donate to Philabundance, and also bring non-perishable food items to the 6abc Dunkin Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade.
