PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- At least eight people have been shot so far this weekend in Philadelphia. Four of the victims died.

As the violence continues to run rampant, community activists say it's time to push back.

"It just needs to stop," said Raheem Bell, a shooting survivor and community leader in Northeast Philadelphia. "We've got to make a change, you know? Be positive role models."

The 27-year-old was sitting in his car last April on the 1400 block of East Cheltenham Avenue when two men stole his vehicle and shot him.

"No, I never would ever believe my son would be a victim. It devastated me," said Raheema Haynes, Bell's mother.

More than 1,500 people have been shot in Philadelphia so far this year.

Bell wants to find community-based solutions. To start, he held a block party Saturday with school supplies, food, and games for the kids.

"Spread some positivity to the community and youth because, as you know, there's been a lot of destruction a lot of violence, not a lot of positive role models, so we feel like this is positive and this is needed," said Jeffrey Batchler, Bell's business partner.

Still, as their block celebrated, violence continued in other parts of the city.

A 31-year-old man was killed after being shot four times on the 5400 block of Chester Avenue on Friday night.

Hours later, a 20-year-old woman was shot once in the thigh on the 1300 block of North Orianna Street.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man died after being shot in the chest on the 1800 block of East Orleans Street.

"Philadelphia is just, I don't know what happened, it's just horrible," said Haynes.

While shootings around the city surge, Bell and his family say the violence will not detract them from doing good for their neighborhood.

"I'm just happy and blessed that I'm here to be able to continue to do things like this," said Bell.

Bell says the people who shot him have not been caught. There have also been no arrests in the four homicides within the last 24 hours, according to police.
