PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- An off-duty Philadelphia police officer and a man on a scooter exchanged gunfire during a possible road rage incident late Thursday night, police said.

Right now all investigators have is the off-duty officer's account. They are trying to sort through what exactly happened and find the other person involved.

The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. along the 7600 block of Ridge Avenue in the city's Roxborough section.
According to police, the off-duty officer told investigators a man on a scooter fired a gun into his vehicle during the incident.

The officer said that's when he returned fire and then the suspect ran from the scene.

Police said the officer was not hurt. It's unclear whether the suspect was hit after the officer returned fire.

Bullets did, however, hit a red SUV that was parked on Ridge Avenue.

One bullet went through the other side of the vehicle and then landed on the ground.

Another struck the wall of a nearby building.

Detectives were seen going door to door looking for any surveillance video on Friday.

Their hope is any video will paint a clearer picture of what happened and determine whether this is a case of road rage, or not.

The unit that handles officer involved shootings is leading this case.

The officer is placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for any police involved shooting.

Sources tell Action News the officer has been on the force since December of 2016 and is assigned to the 14th District.
