Son dead, father and bystander injured after gunfire erupts at Philadelphia corner store: sources

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- One man is dead after an apparent armed robbery led to a triple shooting inside a North Philadelphia corner store on Wednesday night.

Action News has learned two of the people shot were father and son.

Sources say the son, who has been identified as 34-year-old Luimi Nunez, was targeted by three individuals.

Officers were called to the store, Nuevo Amanecer, at approximately 5 p.m. on the 2900 block of Hancock Street.

At the scene, authorities located three victims.

Police said Nunez had been shot three times, his 61-year-old father was shot twice, and a third victim in his mid-20s was shot once.

All three were transported to area hospitals, where Nunez was pronounced dead. His father and the other victim are in critical condition, according to police.



Residents in the area told Action News the man who was killed was the son of the store owner and worked as a cook.

According to sources, after Nunez was shot, his father pulled out a gun but accidentally shot a customer who was using the store's ATM.

"It's a big loss, it's a really big loss," said Marisol Hidalgo from Kensington. "He always has a smile, his spirit is so inviting. He's very nice."

Officers have not provided a description of the suspects involved.



Hidalgo told Action News the father-son duo were a positive force in their community.

"I never saw any negative on them. Everything, it was positive," she said. "They're always helping people in the neighborhood."

"They're good people," another customer told Action News. "They work hard, sometimes seven days a week. Most of the time they're working 10 to 12-hour days."

Officers say no weapons were recovered at the scene and no arrests have been made.

The city is offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.
