OVERBROOK (WPVI) -- Overbrook High School was under lockdown Wednesday morning after a teacher reported hearing a gunshot inside the school.

The lockdown began around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the high school located on Lancaster Avenue in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia police arrived on the scene and began their investigation. Inspector Derrick Wood soon tweeted no weapons were found and there were no injuries.

"Once we got here, there was a little bit of a conflicting story initially, but we were able to ascertain that no one physically saw a gun inside of the school and we don't have any evidence to support that there was a gunshot inside of this school. What occurred seemed to be a fight outside of the school which we are still investigating," Philadelphia Police Captain John Stanford said.

Concerned parents showed up to the school to make sure their children were safe.

Some parents told Action News they happened to be in the neighborhood and saw all of the police activity at their child's school. They said their hearts dropped.
"We were concerned to see all the cop cars because we didn't get a phone call from anyone and we were afraid because we know school shootings happen a lot," parent Dorothy Hayes said.

"One thing I do know is that Philadelphia cops are good. They are no joke. They jump on stuff," parent Timothy Morris said.

Police said even though this turned out to be a false alarm, the teacher did the right thing by alerting authorities.

Parents are relieved that their kids were never in any danger.

"I feel relieved that it was not another school shooting so I am very happy it didn't turn into that," Hayes said.

The lockdown was lifted around 10:20 a.m
