PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A deadly crash shut down I-95 north in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section for hours early Friday morning.

It happened at 12:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes, just north of the Betsy Ross Bridge.

Police say a black Nissan sedan was driving at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control on a curve, slamming into a concrete barrier and a metal guardrail along the shoulder before hitting a utility pole and coming to a stop down an embankment.

The driver and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

PennDOT and PECO were called in to fix hanging, live wires from the struck utility pole.

The highway was closed for an extended period of time as police investigated.

All lanes reopened around 6 a.m.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
