34th Annual African American Children's Book Fair held at Pennsylvania Convention Center

Friday, February 6, 2026
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- On Saturday afternoon, about 4,000 people are expected at the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the 34th annual African American Children's Book Fair.

Hundreds of beautiful and impactful books celebrating African American life and history will be on display and for sale.

Over 40 of the industry's top authors and illustrators will also be on hand to meet readers.

"This is one of the largest and oldest single day events in the country for children's books," says founder and director Vanesse Lloyd-Sgambotti. "We I say we pack in, we pack in the stars."

Among them will be Caldecott and Newberry Award winners, including Renee Watson, who just won the Newberry for her book "All the Blues in the Sky," about a teen dealing with the death of a friend.

Also there will be author Alice Faye Duncan, with her book about a speech Dr. Martin Luther King gave to students in South Philadelphia.

"I will be reading 'The Dreambuilder's Blueprint,' and we'll be reading as a call and response. So come and join me!" she said.

The fair aims to give young Black readers a chance to truly see themselves in the story. It also opens arms for people of all other backgrounds, especially those who love history.

You'll find books like "The Ice Cream Man" by Glenda Armand.

It's the true story of a young Philadelphia boy, Augustus Jackson, who created the first ice cream recipe for the White House in the 1800s.

He came back to Philly and built an ice cream parlor empire. Figuring out how using rock salt made ice cream freeze faster and stay frozen in transport.

The fair is open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday February 6.
