Police say the incident began around 3:30 p.m. near Broad Street and Roosevelt Boulevard, when officers tried to place handcuffs on the suspect. During the struggle, the suspect and an officer fell through the front window of the business, shattering the glass.
"This is Broad St and Philly so everything is always happening," said Anaese Hernandez, a regular customer at the store. "But I always be careful when I go here."
The suspect, identified as Marcus Elmore, was taken to the hospital with injuries and later charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person (REAP), and resisting arrest.
Police believe Elmore was attempting to cash a fake check and had previously tried to do so at the same location.
Three officers were transported to area hospitals.
According to police radio transmissions during the incident, one officer was taken to Einstein Medical Center with facial lacerations, and another to Temple University Hospital with a laceration to his right hand. A third officer was treated at the scene.
"I can't feel my arm," one officer said over the radio, describing his injuries.
The Philadelphia Police Commissioner said on Wednesday, "During that incident, one of our officers did receive a laceration to his head and received stitches. Some received minor cuts. One of the officers has an injury to his wrist - we're still evaluating." He added, "It reinforces the dangers men and women face in multiple ways."
The store reopened on Wednesday.
Elmore remains in custody as the investigation continues.
