"I am going to St. Louis to visit my parents," said Debi Voshell, of Dover, Delaware.
"We are going to Deerfield, Florida," said Jena Valentino, of Huntingdon Valley.
The lines at the checkpoint between Terminals D and E were relatively light early Tuesday, much to the joy of travelers.
"I kind of work a lot around airlines and friends and family in the airlines so I know the days to avoid and the days to go," said Darryl Mosely, of Tampa, Florida.
TSA expects to screen nearly 18.7 million travelers at US airport security checkpoints between Tuesday and next Monday, with Thursday expected to have the highest volume.
According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, nearly a million Philadelphia area residents are planning to travel during AAA's designated nine-day holiday period, which started Saturday. Most will go by car, but more than 93,000 will travel by air.
The percentage of people in the "other" category- like trains, buses, and cruise ships- is up 6.7%.
"The cruise line industry has rebounded exponentially. People love the ability to cruise. You can cruise out of Philadelphia here now, which was wonderful in terms of home port cruising," said Jana Tidwell, of AAA.
While a lot of people are getting out of town, plenty are also flocking in. It is the country's 250th birthday, and many want to celebrate it in the birthplace of our nation.

"I'm going to Jamaica to see my son- it is his graduation- so I will be back for the Fourth of July. I will be at Penn's Landing to see the fireworks and all of that," said Paul Grant of Northeast Philadelphia.
Plus, there's the ongoing World Cup. Some are traveling to games while others are trying to avoid the last Philadelphia match on Saturday.
"I try to get out before the games start," said Shakerea Brown, of Bridgeton.
"I've been to Canada. We played two games in Philly - now we're going to Texas- Dallas- and then coming back to New York," said Ivory Coast fan Alassane Bamba of Lindenwold, who has traveled to every Ivory Coast match in this tournament so far.
Tidwell cautions this extreme heat could impact travel this week.
"The intense heat that we see ahead of us here on the east coast will likely trigger summer storms," Tidwell explained. "Sign up for the notifications. Airlines are normally very good about pushing out information that a storm is coming."
