'All of us could have perished': Family recounts harrowing escape after son alerted by smoke alarms

PINE HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- The Worrells are grateful their family is alive after their house went up in flames in Pine Hill, Camden County, on Tuesday. They are crediting one of their sons with alerting the family to escape after hearing the smoke alarms.

The family of six had to borrow the clothes they are now wearing and only managed to salvage their car keys.

While the house is destroyed, the family is counting their blessings.

Cellphone video given to Action News shows the inside of the charred home.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 100 block of Erial Road around 1 a.m.

When crews arrived, they found heavy fire conditions in all four areas of the home, including the basement with people trapped inside.

Lo and Josh Worrell, their four children -- ages 18, 16, 6 and 5 -- and Lo's father were all inside the home when the blaze started.

The Worrell's 16-year-old son Damian heard the kitchen smoke alarm and alerted his parents.

"We grabbed our kids immediately. Our two young girls, five and six. We came upstairs and we couldn't see a thing," Lo described. "The smoke was so black and we couldn't even breathe."

However, they didn't realize their 18-year-old son Nick hadn't come out.

That's when Josh tried to go back to get him.

"I thought Nick was with him," Lo said. "He tried to go in and rescue Nick but he couldn't get past the flames and I was just on the ground, preparing to bury my son and he came running through the flames and out into my arms."

"I can't even tell you, I just burst into tears. I wouldn't let him go," she added.

Turns out Nick was fast asleep and when they couldn't get to him, Damian grabbed his cell phone.

"His brother was texting him and calling his phone saying, 'Get out. The house is on fire,' and it woke him up. He just said he knew the route to the front door so he just rushed down through the flames and everything to get out," Lo recalled. "All of his hair is singed off -- his eyebrows, everything."

The entire family was able to make it out of the house alive. They were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

"My father had to jump about almost 15 feet out of the window. He has burns all over his back," Lo said. "He was able to walk it off. I don't know if it was the adrenaline but they're checking him for fractures."

Fire officials said it took crews about 40 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Lo's dad bought the house in 1989 and this is the only home she's ever lived in.

After her father was diagnosed with cancer, she was his caretaker and this house was a gift to them.

"Use fire, smoke detectors. Smoke detectors save," Lo said. "My son heard it! Every house needs them. Make sure you have them because we're a family of six and all of us could have perished in this fire if it wasn't for my son hearing that smoke alarm."

There has been no word on what caused the fire.
