"It's a great, beautiful story of love and reconnection," says Frances Egler, Vice President of Theatrical Programming and Presentations for Ensemble Arts Philly.
"And that space is magical," says Michael Greif, co-director of "The Notebook." "The Academy of Music is the most beautiful theater in all of the United States."
Allie and Noah's relationship takes you on an emotional roller coaster.
"It's a musical about a home and finding home and making your home a loving place," says Greif. "And a great love that lasts a lifetime."
Get your tissues ready.
"When they had the show on Broadway, they did have at the concession stand a box of tissues that you could buy," says Egler.
"The story actually takes place in three different time frames," says Greif.
Three sets of actors play the couple. Audiences get to see when Noah and Allie first meet. Then, you see them about ten years later when they're reunited. And, finally, about 50 years after their first meeting and they're still together.
"One of them has a failing memory and the other one is trying to tell them the story of their love affair," says Egler.
And there's a touching, original score rounding out the romance.
Greif says the emotions are so heightened they really "justify singing."
"There are some very, very, very beautiful songs," he says. "Your imagination is engaged in a very different way."
"You know, it might rain on stage, but who knows?" says Egler.
"It's really a story that dignifies their lasting love," says Greif. "So, I hope that everyone thinks that that kind of love is worth fighting for."
"The Notebook" runs July 21 through August 2 at the Academy of Music.
