Abington Twp. commissioners vote to replace police department's Flock Safety surveillance system

ABINGTON TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- The use of Flock Safety cameras -- or automated license plate readers -- has come under fire in Abington Township, Montgomery County.

The Township Board of Commissioners voted Thursday night on a contract to replace the police department's Flock Safety surveillance system.

The police department says the new system will put more limits on data sharing.

Flock Safety is currently under investigation by Congress, following multiple reports of law enforcement officers misusing the database.



Its license plate-reader cameras photograph every passing vehicle, and then enter the information into a database that police can search without a warrant.

Meanwhile, controversy continues to grow over a website that allows drivers to see if Flock surveillance cameras have searched for their vehicle.
