Box truck damages cars on narrow South Philly street; driver flees

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are searching for the box truck driver who damaged several parked cars Monday morning while attempting to squeeze down a narrow South Philadelphia street.

The incident happened just after 9:15 a.m. on Pierce Street. As it maneuvered through the tight space, it struck multiple vehicles before speeding away.

"I've never seen something like that. It was insane," said Eddie Alfaro, a South Philadelphia resident. "He totaled the two cars, and we were like screaming right behind him and he did not stop."

Video captured by neighbors shows the truck clearing a turn and accelerating away as residents chased after it. Witnesses said the truck had no license plates or company markings, and the driver was gone before anyone on the ground could get a good look at who was behind the wheel.

"Some people are just like that, they don't care," said William Klampfer, another neighbor.

Residents said a few homes on the block are being renovated and are under construction, so they often see large vehicles attempting to navigate the narrow street, despite its size.

"If you know the street's small, why do you even try to come down it?" said block captain, Adam Simons.

While cars have been hit before, neighbors said drivers usually leave a note or knock on doors in an attempt to find the owner.

"I actually find it more common that people are pretty courteous," said Mike Rispoli. "But I also know sometimes not everyone's gonna stop, and obviously I wish that they did."

No injuries were reported, but residents are now dealing with insurance claims and the loss of their vehicles.

Alfaro said his brother's car was totaled. Police responded to the scene Monday morning, but no suspect has been identified.

"It's pretty messed up what you did," Alfaro said. "I feel like you should be held accountable for that."
