County commissioners hosted a medal ceremony recognizing five service members who served in the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Navy. The event, held just days before the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, underscored the county's message of gratitude to veterans.
Officials said the ceremony was part of an ongoing effort to ensure veterans know their contributions have not been forgotten. The county regularly holds similar events throughout the year to recognize and thank those who have served.
"We can never say thank you enough - to our veterans - and today's event stressed that message," organizers said.
Kevin Cooper, a Marine Corps veteran, spoke about the lasting impact of military service.
"I want people to remember that Veterans have sacrificed a lot for this country and they came home and they are still battling mentally," he said.
Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen praised the honorees for their service.
"You are part of a group that there is only a select amount of individuals who have been through what you all have been through in serving out country, and I think that in itself is very meaningful," he said.
The medals presented included the county's Military Service Medal, as well as Korean War Service, Vietnam War Service and War on Terror medals.
"It really is an honor and a privilege for us to be able to celebrate all those who fought for our freedom and what we enjoy today," said Colleen Bianco Bezich of the Camden County Board of Commissioners.
A brief ceremonial tribute, including the playing of taps and remarks from a minister, highlighted the solemn tone of the event.
"May this event today be a fitting tribute to those we honor and a reminder that freedom is both a precious gift a sacred responsibility," the minister said.
For Cooper and others, the recognition carried personal significance.
"I really feel appreciated that they honored us today," he said.
County officials said the ceremony also served as an opportunity to connect veterans with resources, including mental health support and information about available benefits, reinforcing their commitment to those who have served.
