Carrots - and tomatoes and spinach - really do help your eyes

NEW YORK, N.Y. (WPVI) -- It turns out mom was right.

A new study shows a link between eating fruits and vegetables that are high in carotenoids and a lower risk for macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of vision loss.

Specifically, it was carrots, oranges, tomatoes and spinach that made a difference.

The more people ate, the more their risk went down.

The theory is the anti-oxidants protect against light-induced free radicals, which can lead to damage.
