Cheltenham School District cancels high school's 2026 football season amid hazing investigations

CHELTENHAM, Pa. (WPVI) -- Cheltenham High School will not field varsity or junior varsity football teams next year, extending a suspension that began last fall after a studentonstudent locker room assault prompted multiple investigations.

Students and parents learned of the decision through a letter from the superintendent, who announced that the football program will remain canceled for the 2026 season.

The move follows a hazing investigation that led to the suspension of the most recent season in October and its cancellation in November.

Junior Raejaun Buddington said many students are struggling to process the news.

"The public is viewing it from an outside view, but in reality it's not what it seems," he said. "I feel like the kids deserve a second chance. (For) some it them, it was their last year."

The district's letter cites previous communication that mentions the September locker room assault, which triggered investigations by the school district, Cheltenham Township Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.

According to the district's findings, 19 students witnessed the assault, and some recorded it on their phones.

The district says none intervened, though some parents dispute that account.

An external hazing review concluded that the football program required a full overhaul. District officials said they cannot begin that process because the police and district attorney investigations remain active.

The superintendent's letter stated, "The district cannot build a path forward around unknowns, the scope and nature of what must be addressed will be determined by the evidence, and that process must be allowed to run its course before any meaningful next steps can be taken."

Parents expressed mixed reactions, with some upset and others unsurprised by the decision. Buddington said the situation has affected the school's image.

"It's not giving us a good reputation. I feel like Cheltenham, we're more than this," he said.

The district said it has been in contact with the PIAA regarding procedures for studentathlete transfers.

Officials also plan to secure performance opportunities for the school's band, cheerleaders and color guard. A ninthgrade football team will still operate next year.
