PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Chinatown's only Black-owned business is preparing to host a community Iftar this weekend, offering free meals and a message of unity during Ramadan.

The Square, the city's first Blackowned food court, will serve hundreds of people at sundown as part of the observance. The Race Street establishment includes several Blackowned restaurants offering cheesesteaks, seafood, and desserts.

Organizers say the event is open to everyone, regardless of faith or whether they are fasting.

"You don't have to be a fasting Muslim to be there," said Garci Peterkin, owner of Carter's Steaks, 1111 Lounge, and The Square food court. "We will be open, and we will feed 300 people."

Event organizer Jalil Meekins said the gathering is also meant to strengthen ties with the surrounding neighborhood.

"One of the things that we want to do is show a good example to our neighbors in Chinatown," Meekins said. "Islam is a faith of peace, tranquility, and love."

The Iftar is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday along the 1000 block of Race Street.
