Community demands accountability after ICE standoff in Trooper, Montgomery County

TROOPER, Pa. (WPVI) -- Two days after a dramatic standoff with federal immigration agents, community leaders, immigrant rights advocates and family members gathered Wednesday at the Montgomery County home where the incident unfolded to demand accountability and policy changes.

"Bravery right now does not look like carefully worded statements. It looks like proactive policy," one speaker said during the gathering.

The group called for the termination of the agents and officers involved in Monday's arrest in Trooper, Pa., and urged local governments to pass laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Cellphone video recorded inside the home on the 2800 block of North Barry shows the moment agents forced their way in. The agents were searching for Jose Lopez.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said Lopez had been charged with driving under the influence in 2025 and had an expired visa.

During Monday's enforcement action, the spokesperson said Lopez "weaponized his vehicle and rammed an ICE vehicle," a claim family members dispute.

Lopez then barricaded himself inside the home, prompting a standoff. After obtaining a warrant, agents entered and arrested him in front of his family.

"When they slammed him down, he couldn't do anything. There were like five to six cops on top of him punching him, hitting him," said his cousin, Guadalupe Lopez. "My little brothers now are traumatized."

Family members said damage to the home must be compensated for, and called for Lopez's immediate release.

"We will fight for our families, we will fight for our freedom, and we will fight for our future," said Jasmine Rivera of the PA Immigrant Coalition.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
