Delvin Barnes arrives in Philadelphia to face charges

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Kidnapping suspect Delvin Barnes traveled from Virginia to Philadelphia today to be tried in the abduction of Carlesha Freeland Gaither.

The 37-year-old arrived shortly after noon. He is scheduled for a court appearance here later this week.

FBI agents picked up Barnes early Tuesday morning at the Riverside Regional Jail outside Richmond.

Late Friday a federal judge issued a court order to have Barnes returned to Philadelphia, acting on a request from the U.S. Attorney's office.

It appears Barnes will be tried in federal court first before being returned to Virginia to face state charges there.

In the meantime, he is being held at the Federal Detention Center in Center City awaiting arraignment on Wednesday.

It was last Wednesday when Barnes was captured in Jessup, Maryland and Carlesha Freeland-Gaither, the young woman he's accused of abducting, was rescued.

Surveillance video allegedly shows Barnes snatching her off the streets of Germantown three days earlier.

After Barnes' arrest, he was taken to Virginia to face charges in connection with the abduction of a 16-year-old girl there.

However authorities in Virginia have agreed to let Barnes be prosecuted in Philadelphia first in Freeland Gaither's case. He will then be returned to Virginia to face trial on the state charges there.

Police continue retracing his steps and multiple jurisdictions are taking another look at similar cases to see if there might be a link.

One man says Barnes should never have been on the street. That man, Anthony, explains his daughter was married to Barnes in 2005. It lasted a week before she got a restraining order.

Barnes broke into her house where he raped and beat her. Her father tried to intervene and Barnes smashed a glass bowl over his head.

Barnes was arrested and spent the next eight years in jail.

Anthony says if he got the max, his two latest alleged victims would have been safe.

"I knew he was going to get in trouble again. I did know that's the kind of person he is. But I had no idea he would do something like that," Anthony said.
