In the Main Fountain Garden, DJ Jazzy Jeff spun for a crowd of more than 1,300 people in Kennett Square. His 90-minute set was synced live with the illuminated fountains.
"I know about the fountains, and I know about the music, and I'm like, putting those two things together might be special," DJ Jazzy Jeff told Action News before his set. "To be this close to home, and playing for your hometown team, I'm so excited."
Tim Martin, the interim director of the arts at Longwood Gardens, said his team had been planning the show for 10 years. Martin said they wanted guests to be able to experience the garden in a different way.
"We wanted everyone up on their feet, and we thought DJ Jazzy Jeff was the perfect artist, Philadelphia-born and bred artist, to bring folks here and get them up and moving," he explained.
Martin said the arts team at Longwood synced up with DJ Jazzy Jeff's team.
"As soon as we did that, we were talking to our plumbers, our electricians, our carpenters, our horticulture, to make sure we could put the stage on the grass correctly."
He said one of the most exciting parts of this experiment was that the fountains moved live with the performance. Three designers were on hand to light the dance floor and water, while also making the water move. Martin said the team was prepared to react to DJ Jazzy Jeff as he mixed.
In the garden, hundreds of people were up on their feet dancing along to the set.
Dallas Barber, of Claymont, Delaware, brought his wife out to the show to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary.
Speaking about DJ Jazzy Jeff, Barber said, "Been following him forever. He's a Philadelphia mainstay. So the fact he came all the way out here is amazing."
Vernon Monroe, of Yeadon, watched the set with his wife, Latoya.
"For a backdrop like this, I mean, it just didn't get any better. It's just gorgeous," he told Action News.
