PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A DoorDash driver was shot and killed while making a delivery in Southwest Philadelphia on Tuesday night, according to police.

The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. on the 1000 block of South Ithan Street.

Philadelphia police said officers responded to reports of a shooting and found a 42-year-old man lying in the street next to his vehicle with the engine still running.

Investigators said the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

At the scene, police recovered several cell phones, the victim's DoorDash delivery bag and two spent shell casings believed to be rifle rounds.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said the evidence suggests the victim was targeted.

"I believe the victim was targeted because where he was found laying was right next to his vehicle," Small said. "The vehicle's registered to him. The engine is still running. The spent shell casings, which appear to be rifle rounds, were just a few inches from where the victim's body was lying. Also, just a few inches away was the DoorDash delivery bag."

Police said they are searching for three male suspects who were wearing masks at the time of the shooting.

Investigators are also working to obtain surveillance video from cameras on nearby homes in hopes of identifying those responsible.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
