It happened around 1 a.m. on Friday along the 9300 block of Frankford Avenue near Pearson Avenue in the city's Torresdale section.
Officers say a silver 2024 Kia Telluride was being driven southbound at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control.
Police found male driver, identified as 32-year-old Ziyodillo Tursunpulatov, trapped in the back seat after the SUV went airborne, striking a utility pole and hitting an parked car.
Tursunpulatov was pronounced dead at the scene.
Action News viewed video of the high speed crash. It doesn't appear Tursunpulatov hit the brakes before going airborne into the pole.
The entire front end of the SUV was smashed in and the engine was lying in the middle of the road.
A tow truck crew carefully removed the mangled vehicle from where it was lodged and carried away pieces of the bumper and car parts that were sprawled across the street.
"It's like a target zone here," said Dr. John Cacchio.
Cacchio owns a building at the corner and says someone ran into the building last year. He says speeding has been longtime issue.
"I grew up right next door and probably 8-10 times there'll be cars on the front lawn, in the building, next to the building," he said. "It's a very dangerous spot. There's a turn right here and people go too fast don't navigate the turn. I'm glad the building is ok but, more importantly, I'm just sad that there's somebody who lost their life because of this situation."
Other residents in the area have seen crashes as drivers sped around the curve.
"Tire fell off, hit another car, but my son's bus stop is right here," said resident Mike Beck.
Neighbors said it gets scary when drivers act recklessly.
"It definitely is an issue. Since I've been here there's been, like, three accidents," said resident Megan Toomey.
No one else was injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
