Tense standoff in Montgomery County as ICE arrest sparks protests

TROOPER, Pa. (WPVI) -- There was a tense scene in Montgomery County on Monday afternoon as federal agents worked to take a man into custody.

Chopper 6 was overhead as neighbors and protesters shouted at masked immigration agents in a confrontation that lasted several hours.

We know it all began with a car crash and an attempt to apprehend an immigrant over his legal status.

Guadalupe Lopez could not contain her emotions after she alleges ICE agents broke down her door, hit her in the head, arrested her cousin, Jose Lopez, and took him into custody.

"He said if he doesn't come out, we are going to bust the door down. I'm like, 'Bro, you don't have a warrant. You don't have anything. What are you talking about?'" recalled Guadalupe Lopez.

The ordeal began around 8 a.m. The family says Jose Lopez, who is in the country illegally, left the home on the 2800 block of N. Barry and drove off to work.

He soon realized ICE agents were waiting for him down the road.

"He tried to stop, but then they boxed him in, and he said he hit the brakes hard. He made sure not to hit the car because he obviously knows," said Lopez.

The family says Lopez drove back to the house and barricaded himself inside. Federal agents told the family that Lopez struck their vehicle. When he wouldn't come out, a standstill ensued.

Protesters began arriving on the scene as federal agents awaited an arrest warrant.

Neighbors were troubled by the presence of ICE agents.

"I'm heartbroken because these are innocent people going about their daily lives on a daily basis," said neighbor Olivia Branca.

Guadalupe Lopez went live on Instagram and recorded an ICE agent waving at her. After securing the warrant, agents stormed the house and arrested Lopez.

State Representative Joe Webster, a Democrat who represents the district, arrived on the scene and voiced his dismay.

"Very frustrating scenario. I am being very strident and direct about it, but we were invaded by this ragtag bunch," Webster said.

The Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement have not commented on Monday's allegations and actions.
