FORT WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- Local youth got on the move in a 5k race to celebrate an athletic mentorship program.

With "Girls on the Run Southeastern Suburban PA," coaches volunteer their time to teach girls how to achieve their goals.

The nonprofit is a part of a larger organization spread across the United States and Canada.

"Girls on the Run (GOTR)...works with girls in third through eighth grade, and we serve them in the afterschool space. Two times a week, we teach lessons on confidence, character and setting goals focused on movement," said Executive Director, Evaleen Demarco of GOTR Southeastern Suburban PA.

"It's an untimed race, so they're able to go at their 'happy pace...' which is really just listening to your body and feeling your best," said Outreach Manager, Caitlyn Johnson of GOTR Southeastern Suburban PA.

"Just celebrating them and giving them a sense of belonging. Seeing the girls develop confidence that's going to carry them through their next phase of life...it's really rewarding for me," she continued.
