The incident happened on Friday at Compass SelfStorage in Deptford, where employees reviewed surveillance video after noticing the jar was missing.
"He should have known better," said Lt. Bob Jones of the Deptford Township Police Department.
Video shows the driver arriving in a burgundy Buick, delivering an order, taking a photo to confirm the dropoff, and then noticing the donation jar, which was collecting money for cancer research.
"It looks like he was having a moral dilemma for a moment, and he was thinking, 'Should I or shouldn't I.' And I guess he had the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other shoulder and I guess he listened a little too much to the devil on the shoulder-and he decided to actually take it and walk out with it," Jones said.
Police say the jar contained about $98. The driver is seen picking it up, walking out calmly and driving away.
Investigators say the theft was far from a clean getaway. The business had extensive surveillance coverage.
"They had just wonderful closed-circuit TV cameras throughout inside and outside," Jones said.
The cameras captured the suspect, his vehicle and his license plate.
"You should have known you were going to be on video. You should have known this was going to be spread far and wide," he added.
Grubhub orders also typically include the first name of the delivery driver as well.
Grubhub released a statement to Action News saying, "We are troubled by this report and will do everything we can, including working with local law enforcement, to make things right."
Police say they are close to identifying the driver.
"Obviously, the video was pretty clear. You don't need to be Colombo to figure this one out," Jones said.
Compass SelfStorage is cooperating with investigators and continues raising money for blood cancer research to replace what was taken. Donations are being collected via this link: https://diy.bloodcancerunited.org/team/706592
