Haverford's Chris D'Angelo Living out his 'Jeopardy!' dream

Updated 2 hours ago
HAVERFORD, Pa. (WPVI) -- It's a local dream more than two decades in the making.

Haverford, Pennsylvania native Chris D'Angelo has been auditioning for "Jeopardy!" since 2005.

He's finally getting a chance to ring that buzzer on the popular ABC game show.

His journey to get on "Jeopardy!" was the inspiration for the Emmy-winning Hulu film "Quiz Lady" starring Sandra Oh and Akwafina.

His sister, Jen, wrote the screenplay, loosely based on Chris' "Jeopardy!" dream.

"Maybe you can call me 'Quiz Guy,'" says Chris. "That's fun. It works. But, you know, I don't have a lot in common with Akwafina's character beyond the game show interest and trying to get on the show for many years."

But, as fate would have it, just like in the film, Chris is getting a chance to compete!

"Finally, this year I got the call," he says, after 21 years of attempts.

Jen and Chris both attended Episcopal Academy.

If you ask teachers, family members or friends, his "Jeopardy!" appearance doesn't come as a surprise.

"Chris knows everything," laughs Jen. "We were like a very trivia-forward family."

"There are a couple of things that prepared me for the 'Jeopardy!' journey," says Chris. "I'm a former history teacher, which means that I know a little bit about a lot of stuff, and I do crossword puzzles regularly."

What was it like finally stepping onto that "Jeopardy!" stage?

"Walking into this space that you've always wanted to be on," he says, "It's really kind of overwhelming and incredibly exciting."
