High-speed Center City crash at busy intersection injures 2 women, triggers calls for safety changes

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A high-speed crash at a busy Center City Philadelphia intersection was caught on surveillance on Wednesday afternoon, leaving two women injured and prompting neighbors to call for traffic safety measures.

Surveillance video shows a woman crossing the street at 16th and Lombard. She tries to run when she sees a silver SUV barreling down Lombard. The SUV slams into a Range Rover that had the green light, ejecting a passenger, while the pedestrian is driven into the wall of a Jewish community center.

Viewer video recorded moments before the crash shows the speeding SUV.

Mark Krull, who was following the vehicle, said, "It looked like he might lose control, so I ducked in the corner."

He then heard the impact. In the video, Krull is heard saying, "Oh my God, somebody got hurt."

Krull continued recording as neighbors rushed to help the injured pedestrian.

"A ton of witnesses here because this is a very busy street," he said.

The crash happened around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, directly in front of Independence Charter School, which serves about 800 students.

"The chaos of cars in the middle of the street, cars in the sidewalk," said Matt Kelley, the school's CEO. He said the school dismissed early that day.

"We would have been preparing to send hundreds of students right out to the corner here of 16th and Lombard," Kelley said.

Witnesses crowded the intersection after the collision. Krull's video shows neighbors surrounding a man they said was the driver of the SUV.

"There's the guy who caused the accident," Krull is heard saying.

The group kept him at the scene until the police arrived.

Medics treated two injured women. One remains in the hospital in stable condition.

"I'm praying for their full recovery," said Rabbi Doniel Grodnitzky of Mamash Chabad, whose building wall was damaged in the crash, says his focus is on the victims.

"I was like, I'm seeing a miracle of God that somehow these two young women survived. It's absolutely incredible, so I'm so thankful for that," Grodnitzky said.

Neighbors said they want the city to take action, including installing speed bumps to slow drivers along the corridor.

Police in the 17th District are investigating the crash, and sources said the SUV driver is under investigation for DUI.
