TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as he was crossing an intersection near the Trenton Transit Center early Friday morning.

Police said the 52-year-old man was crossing Greenwood Avenue near Walnut Avenue around 1 a.m. Friday when he was struck by a vehicle that did not stop.

The man suffered multiple fractured ribs and a brain hemorrhage. He was taken to Capital Health, where he later died.

A witness told police the vehicle involved was a Dodge. Investigators said it is likely a dark-colored truck or SUV with front-end damage.

Detective Lt. David Ordille said the driver fled the scene as investigators work to identify the vehicle.

"The vehicle fled the scene and at this point we are trying to identify the vehicle and follow up with them," Ordille said.

The incident has shaken people living in the nearby neighborhood around the transit center.

"It's horrible. These people kind crazy around here nowadays. So anything can happen," Danny Allen of Trenton said.

Another resident, Denise Duehart of Trenton, believes she knows the man, having seen him about the neighborhood.

"If it's the same person I'm thinking about - it's a shame," she said.

Detectives are reviewing multiple surveillance cameras in the area in an effort to develop leads.

"We just try to follow the bread crumbs and hope we can find something that's usable to take the next step," Ordille said.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle to contact Trenton Police.
