"Hokus Pokus Live!" is a love letter to the cult-favorite film, written and directed by newly crowned RuPaul's Drag Race winner Ginger Minj.
"We don't like to say that we are a parody of 'Hocus Pocus' because we love it so much. We don't really want to make fun of it. We're more like a really great tribute band that's bringing our own flair to a tried and true product that everybody just absolutely loves," Minj told Action News.
The drag production of "Hocus Pocus" stars Philadelphia's own crown jewel Sapphira Cristál.
The show is about to kick off a national tour, with new cities just added this week.
Minj and Cristál told Action News that the show picks up where the original Hocus Pocus story left off.
"It's like what would happen if those witches came back right now and, what would happen if they were played by some of your favorite drag queens in the world," said Minj.
"We get to sing. It's all live music. This is not a lip sync show. This is a full live production, and that, you know, utilizes all of our strengths," said Cristál.
The live production is a mix of pop culture references, along with classic scenes from the original movies.
Minj was in Disney's 'Hocus Pocus 2' movie and says the one thing that Bette Midler told her on set inspired this production.
"I play Winifred Sanderson, which I got the chance to do in front of Bette Midler in 'Hocus Pocus 2'. And she's really kind of the catalyst for us doing this show because she told me on set, she was like, 'I like the way that you do me. You should do something with this," recalled Minj.
You can see "Hokus Pokus Live!" at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania on September 11, and at The Playhouse on Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware on October 16.
