"It's not usually this cold, but as you can see, everybody's still out and enjoying themselves," James Turner said.
And the bitter cold made Santa Claus feel right at home, as a fire truck escorted him down North Wayne Avenue. Crowds of families and friends - some perched on shoulders to get a good view - packed the street and sidewalks Friday night for this annual Christmas tradition, led by our very own Ducis Rogers.
"It's a huge turnout, which is amazing. This is what community is all about, especially this time of year," said Matt Gorman with Main Line Sound & Video, the sponsor for the event.
"It's been years and years, but we've elevated it this year, bringing an ice rink and the fire pits. We have crafts, trolleys. It's a tradition for generations that have come to this event," said Deanna Doane with the Wayne Business Association, which hosts the event every year.
While some came for the free hot chocolate, others just to catch a glimpse of Santa, the reason for the season was bright in everyone's minds.
"I love Christmas time, but Christmas time around here is especially good because everybody seems to come together. Like just the other day, I saw people getting together for a coat drive down the street," Walter Johnson from Radnor said.
"I love the family vibe. Everybody's so happy and cheerful, and it's just like such a pure moment. I just love the winter holidays," Paloma Padilla from Wayne said.
"It's a nice thrill to know that Christmas is coming up, and this is something that just reminds us to be grateful," Malayah Garrett from Wayne said.
This is just the kickoff to the holiday season. There's more fun in store throughout the weekend. If you missed the big guy Friday night, he's coming back Saturday for the Santa Parade at 10 a.m.
